City of Freiburg: The City of Freiburg, founded in 1120, has a fascinating history taking it through the middle ages, withstanding numerous battles, mastering the witch hunts, promoting the University (1457) and slowly growing to become the modern metropolis of today.
The old city center documents this long history: Visit the Cathedral (Münster) with the daily open-air market, the City Hall (Rathaus) with the “Glockenspiel” at 12 noon or a number of other historical and cultural sites. And then enjoy the “southern European” charm of the city and its gastronomic delights in its many restaurants and open-air cafes.
The Conference Site: The conference will take place at the Historical Merchant House in the charming city center of Freiburg. Located directly at the Cathedral Square and only 1km from the train station, the building is nowadays used for concerts and receptions.
The "Historische Kaufhaus" (Historical Merchant House) was built by Lienhart Müller between 1520 and 1532. It served as the administrative headquarters for Freiburg's market, customs, and finance offices. At this time, trade was growing rapidly in the city and the duties paid by the merchants who passed through Freiburg was an ever increasing source of income. Additionally, the merchant house provided a place to store goods.
The house's
truly beautiful inner courtyard and four large arcades facing the
Cathedral Square are especially worth noting.
